La principauté de Montbéliard devient ainsi une enclave protestante entourée de régions catholiques, offrant un refuge aux protestants cherchant la liberté religieuse. Il confie cette tâche à Heinrich Schickhardt, un architecte réputé du duché de Wurtemberg. La première pierre est posée en 1601, et la charpente est achevée en 1604. Louis XIV impose le culte catholique et ordonne la démolition des lieux de culte protestants. Les habitants construisent alors un clocher et transforment le temple en église. Il se compose d'une grande pièce rectangulaire, sans chœur ni absides, typiques de la Réforme protestante. Les vitraux ont été remplacés par des fenêtres laissant entrer la lumière naturelle. La présence de goudron tout autour de l’édifice rend le sol complétement imperméable et l’eau stagne dans les sous-sols. Elle a fini par remonter dans les murs et le sol par capillarité. Si bien qu’actuellement il reste à la paroisse près de 700 000€ à trouver d'ici au mois d’octobre. Le budget initial avait estimé les travaux à 3,3 millions d’euros, fin 2024, la facture pourrait grimper à la barre des 4,4 millions d’euros.
